Would you agree that food photography for the restaurant business is an important form of story-telling? – Something I read in one of the countless online blogs I stumble upon while doing my everyday hobby – turned – business.
And I couldn’t agree more!
What do you do when you can’t decide where to eat?
For starters, you tend to read food reviews on Yelp, Zomato and Trip Advisor. Maybe phone a foodie friend, try to get some suggestions,Or perhaps just directly head to the dreaded fast food chain you always end up in.
When you finally decide where to eat, what then?
Scratch that – WHAT WILL MAKE YOU DECIDE WHERE AND WHAT TO EAT?
I’ll tell you what – PHOTOS – Awesome looking PHOTOS that will make you salivate and crave for (sometimes) something you haven’t even tried before!
As the saying goes, “We eat with our eyes first” – Especially in an visual-centric era where taking photos of your food is more rampant than praying the prayer before meals – IT IS FORTUNATELY AND UNFORTUNATELY TRUE. (I do BOTH everytime 🙂
“I have a good camera phone, or my DSLR is just like theirs so I can take good photos of it myself so, why do I need to hire a professional food photographer to take the pictures? Where is my ROI (return of investment) on this?“
This is a common misconception in the industry throughout the world. Some, more than others. The truth of the matter is simple, as a food stylist will say “Food goes in through the Eyes first…”, both figuratively and literally, there is just no comparison to a well thought out photo that has the right balance of lighting, appropriate angles and composition – not to mention the studying and trying to polish the technical skill throughout the years thing. Various studies will show that when you compare a quality photograph of a food item next to a quick photo taken with a phone or camera, the purchase rate of the quality photo will sell more than the other one.
The truth is that food photography, at its highest level, takes many specialty photographic techniques, and even specialty photo equipment, that most photographers do not possess. Different kind of lights for different moods. Mirrors and reflectors in very unique and seemingly mysterious ways to bring out the shape and texture in your food.
SO THAT THE VIEWER CAN SEE, FEEL AND ALMOST TASTE YOUR FOOD.
“Where is my ROI (return of investment) on this?
GOOD FOOD PHOTOS LEAD TO GOOD SOCIAL MEDIA INTERACTION.
GOOD SOCIAL MEDIA INTERACTION LEADS TO ENGAGEMENT.
ENGAGEMENT CAN CONVERT INTO SALES.
(A batch of photos can get you more than a year’s worth of Social Media Content, that’s if you can’t resist another set of dishes to shoot 🙂
How many times have you decided to eat at restaurant solely because your facebook friend kept on posting good photos of food from that place? (#Yum #NomNom #Foodgasm)
A lot more examples I can think of but I know you get the picture. Social Media Marketing has been the trend for quite awhile now – and why not? It’s budget friendly, and with the right tools (a.k.a GOOD FOOD PHOTOS) – EFFICIENT.
Take it from the Kardashians – Not only are they Reality TV stars, but also Social Media royalty – by doing what? NOTHING REALLY, just posting this and that but most importantly, always making online buzz and trying to stay relevant (I don’t know why but it seems in some corners of the world, they are) And what more can a restaurant/cafe/food establishment do to make themselves relevant and create a buzz than with AWESOME, PROFESSIONAL PHOTOS.
In closing, the reason your food establishment needs professional food photography is because the success of your business depends on how much you STAND OUT. So, STAND OUT NOW! Contact Grid Concepts Co, (www.facebook.com/gridconcepts1) or 0917 900 6615 for you own awesome FOOD SHOOT 🙂
